10 Gift ideas for the music lovers in your life

1. Is your music lover a listener, musician or both?
My husband is both which is great for me because last year I bought him a JJ Cale DVD that he loves to play along-with. My living room is now a concert hall. He'll get an iTunes certificate in his stocking this year -- which is, in my opinion, the #1 best, last minute, perfect gift for anyone. All you do is print the certificate at home and voila! You can get Holiday Music for grandma and High School Musical 3 for the kids. There are loads of Music CDs, DVDs and Music Downloads online at places like Collector's Choice Music (3%), fye.com (2%) and Borders.com (2.5%)

2. Does your music lover have an iPod or some other MP3 player attached to their hip?
If not -- I wonder if they would like one? My young niece just figured out that the 'ipod' her dad gave her last year is NOT an ipod but some other MP3 player. Oh well, guess she has passed the age when you can sneak around like that. I'm hoping she passed the 'pink' age too. Though that will be the biggest hurdle for my brother-in-law. Should he get a pink, green or baby blue ipod at Kmart (1%).

3. Does your music lover require a big screen?
I must admit...I love the big screen and Wii Music . My nieghbor's kids have one and I'm getting one for our kids (who will never get a chance to play it). The big screen games are exciting. My son is crazy for a Guitar Hero 5, but he'll have to learn a few more songs on the real guitar before we'll get him that one. I found both games at Game Shark Store (5%) and GameStop, Inc. (2.5%).

4. Does your music lover need to get out of the house?
Nothing like getting dressed up and taking the whole family to a musical event. My daughter would love it if we all went to a Green Day concert instead of the the Symphony but she actually likes the Metropolitan Opera LIVE in HD which we saw at the local movie theater. Can you believe it? Very worth checking out. I get tickets for all our shows at Live Nation (2%) or Fandango.

5. Do you hear singing in the shower?
My ears pop every morning to what sounds like John Lennon singing the yellow submarine underwater. blub blub. I'm sure a Karaoke machine would not go to waste in our house. My son has dropped subtle hints for a portable one which I found at RadioShack (1%). And our family sings around the piano, so this will be a fun, new twist for us to sing-along.

6. Does your music lover play air guitar or worse?
Strumming the kitchen broom to Springstein will never go out of style but maybe it's time for the real thing. If you can afford it this holiday season, it might be fun to actually give your music lover a real guitar, drums, maybe a tamborine to start. How does he hold his broom? Consider a viola, violin or bass? There are tons of musical instruments online at Woodwind and Brasswind (2%), Sam Ash Quikship Corp (2%) and Guitar Center (2%).

7. Is your music lover learning a new instrument (a real one)?
My sister-in-law loves all music and is now mastering everything from the Beatles to Beethoven on her new piano. I think she would love some broadway show tunes in Sheet Music which I found at Sheet Music Plus (3%) and Musicnotes.com (2.5%).

8. Are the dishes shaking out of rythm?
Does it have anything to do with the new drummer in your house? I ran to get music lessons for my daughter who is now playing the bongos like a real pro. The dishes aren't rattling as much. I'm sure moving her drums to the attic helped too. I'm wondering if she'll want a big set of drums next year?

9. Is your music lover a collector?
Uncle Al has Elvis lamps and throws. He loves them. I cannot get enough kitchey, Elvis stuff for him which I love to shop for at Betty's Attic (5%) it is an amazing store. So much fun to look at the old stuff there and some good stuff at MusicSpace.com (3%) too.

10. Last but not least, does your music lover already have everything?
Oh yes, our house is filled with musical gadgets! Yet, there are lots of musical needs that need replenishing like new guitar strings, a personalized guitar strap to replace the one or a new guitar stand like the one my in-laws bought my husband last year. He loves it. This year I'm picking up a new light to put over the player piano. And I'm also ordering drum sticks from Guitar Center (2%). While I'm on the guitar center website...I'll probably order a few kazoos too. Just for back up.
Have a happy, harmonious time shopping around!
